the mid-autumn festival is here again, a time for family, relationships and enjoying all the lovely moon-themed goodies (with bonus rabbits!)
i always get excited when i'm able to match scent themes with my real life experiences, because of the wonderful scent memories that make my perfume more special by association. it was therefore a no-brainer for me to grab Death And Floral's The Same Way I Am In Love With The Moon (Palo Santo blended with smoked sandalwood and a lunar accord. Deep and reminiscent of a breezy night under a looming full moon.) as a perfectly-fitting scent for the celebrations.
sustainable sourcing is very important in this day and age, especially when it involves the conservation and protection of our natural resources like tropical forests, so Death And Floral's choice of using sustainably-harvested palo santo for this scent is a commendable one.
in the bottle, this is predominantly a smoky and pure palo santo, well-blended with the sandalwood. the lunar accord (which comprises night-blooming roses and silver amber, as revealed by the owner Brim) is soft and on the slightly sweeter floral side - it serves well to rein in the strength of the palo santo, which paws the ground and chomps impatiently at the bit.
on application, the palo santo is given its head and on the first sniffs it becomes a completely untamable beast with a core of unique resin and woodiness. the smoke blends well with the palo santo and amplifies the resinous component, while the sandalwood adds a deeper timber (double meaning intended) to the wood aspect.
as the scent dries down a little more, the soft sweet florals from the lunar accord temper the wild spirit of the palo santo and it calms down into something a little more reflective. the amber also contributes to dialing down the intensity, and the end result is a remarkable scent that's entirely apt for contemplating the significance of meaningful relationships in our lives.
i have this in edp form, and a single spritz on my hair and neck lasts for at least a good six hours. this scent is strong yet sentimental, and wearing this feels like Artemis from Greek mythology - an independent female hunter, a chaste beauty yet deadly with her bow and arrows, who laughs in the face of danger and for whom the moon holds a special significance.
with all the moon-focused festivities, i was also inspired by the scent name to try my hand at a piano cover of 月亮代表我的心 (popularised by Teresa Teng), which is now up on my IGTV - do check it out if you're interested!
