Syringa Soapery - Grapefruit Mint (soap)

i was recently preparing the house to welcome a couple of guests over and found a full-sized bar of Syringa Soapery artisan cold process soap in Grapefruit Mint which i had stashed away in a cupboard ever since i had received it as a gift with purchase in a Sucreabeille stash right at the end of last year - and it was absolutely perfect for display and use in the guest bathroom.

amazingly, the soap wasn't any worse for wear after its half year in storage, and my cupboard had gained a beautiful fresh smell that any store-bought potpourri would have to work its behind off to even come close. the clean citrusy smell of both the bar and the atmosphere in my cupboard was true to the official notes for Grapefruit MintRipe, tangy grapefruit fused with garden-fresh mint. This fragrance oil is infused with natural essential oils, including grapefruit, mandarin, orange, lemon, thyme, bergamot, and buchu leaf.

Syringa Soapery specialises in handmade cold process soaps, which have the advantage of cleansing and moisturising through plant oils and butters, clays and natural additives without using harsh ingredients. and this soap definitely did its job in the cleaning department when i tested it on oily hands. its texture is surprisingly soft and the lather is classily silky, without oversized bubbles or the excessive amounts of white foam that sometimes get thrown up from scrubbing with mainstream alternatives. it's not difficult to get the amount of soap you need without too much fuss, and the soap bar also is of a good size to hold and replace even with slippery hands.

after using the soap, i was pleased that the oily food smells i had sought to clean off were gone and were replaced with a soft subtle aroma of citrus, mint and the tiniest accompaniment of fresh herbs that lingered on my hands. the fragrance was very light and faded after about 10-15 minutes or so, which was a very nice touch.

i also loved the beautiful layering of colours in the bar, which made it a statement piece in itself right next to the sink. it was so pretty that when we held the house party, one of my guests actually came to check in with me if it was okay for her to use such a nice soap, and was so delighted after she tried it!

my only regret was that i didn't have a proper well-draining soap dish to do it justice and to preserve the bar for longer, because bar soap was quite a new thing to me and i had to work with what i had on hand at the time. that said, an entry for a simple soap dish has gone up on the shopping list so it's something i'm definitely going to rectify soon.

all in all, i really was pleased to have found this - its functionality and beauty makes it a soap that is well-suited for both everyday use as well as when having guests over. i would definitely be regularly restocking from Syringa Soapery if not for the dual issues that they currently only ship to Canada and the US, and even if they could offer other overseas destinations it would probably be prohibitively expensive given
the weight involved. 8/10.

errata: so after i posted this, the owner of Syringa Soapery reached out to clarify that while their standalone site only offers shipping to the US and Canada, their etsy store does offer international shipping. i went to check and the rates don't appear to be significantly more than prevailing (though soap is always an expensive item to ship due to the weight involved).

this review is of a soap that i had received as an advertised promotional gift with purchase that i had made with my own money. i wasn’t asked to review this as a condition of receipt and didn’t receive any incentives for writing this. i’m not affiliated with Syringa Soapery or Sucreabeille and as always, all opinions remain my own.

unlike other soap stores, Syringa Soapery doesn't have a conventional "lineup" of fragrances. once the current scent offerings are sold out, they usually wouldn't make the same scents any more for a while, but instead offer a variety of new fragrances at the beginning of each month. Grapefruit Mint is no longer being produced for the time being, though the next soap release will be today (august 4th) over at their etsy and their website. prices are usually US$8.25 for a 4oz bar (before shipping).
