Athame+alchemy - First Haul

there are days when it can get a little dreary cooped up at home, since work from home still remains the default for most of us in Singapore. thankfully, the silver lining to this new arrangement is that i've been able to enjoy my wax melts during the day, something that was previously reserved for a late evening or weekend treat back in the days of nine-to-five office hours.

wax melts are another format that i enjoy my scents in, especially when preparing to have guests over since the melts impart their aroma to the entire room. it's really fascinating how such small melts have the power to change the entire atmosphere and mood, and their small size offers more flexibility and range of choice than committing to a (larger) scented candle.

so when the owner Kimberly from Athame and Alchemy reached out to me on Instagram to ask if i would be open to receiving a sample set for review, i found myself curiously poring through the master scent list and purchasing a couple of full-sizes that i was interested in as well. as things turned out, that also happened to be the period when Instagram decided to be difficult with my account and i had to write to a few people to let them know that reviews would be affected - Kimberly was very sweet and understanding when i told her that there would probably be some issues timing-wise as a result, and reassured me to just enjoy her products.

as a relatively new brand, their website and etsy are still in the process of being fully set up, though so far it seems pretty well-organised and straightforward to navigate. details on local/international shipping aren't up yet in their FAQ; i can't speak to experience either since i had received my order following a direct invoice rather than through their shop.

one thing that really resonates with me about Athame and Alchemy is their dedicated focus to creating products that have a lighter impact on the environment. apart from using soy instead of paraffin wax, they seek to drastically reduce the plastic waste that is an almost indispensable part of modern living - each product comes packed in a brown paper bag that has a waterproof coating on the inside to protect the wax. the deliberate effort to source for sustainable and effective materials is a welcome change from the usual plastic wrapping that we see nowadays (especially from larger corporations), and a cause that needs more awareness today.

i bought two four-cube packs (approximately 2.3oz) of wax melts in:
  • Killer Queen (light, warm, mildly spicy ~~ Honey, Vanilla, and a Bit of Bergamot Swirled into Sticky Honey with a Warm Base of Tonka, Tobacco, and Oud)
  • Dark Academia (atmospheric, dark, moody ~~ Teak Bookshelves, Leather Covered Books, Sandalwood, Amyris, Dark Musk, Smoke From an Ancient Stone Fireplace)
and Kimberly was kind enough to include the following additional melts as well:
  • Halloween 'candy bar' wax melt in Snicker Skull (gourmand ~~ Hot Pan Dulse from the Oven then sprinkled with Cinnamon Sugar and filled with Fluffy Vanilla Buttercream… Warm and Delicious. This smells like a fresh Snickerdoodle cookie with Vanilla Frosting!)
  • Halloween 'candy bar' wax melt in Poison Apple (gourmand ~~ Freshly picked Honey Crisp Apples, a Glass of Bourbon aged in Maple Wood Casks, and a touch of Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oils… a Boozy apple, not Bakery Apple Scent)
  • a single cube of Ruby Gloom (fruity, gothy, mysterious ~~ Sandalwood and Dark Musk Perfumes Mingle with a Glass of Absinthe, Juicy Blackberries and Black Currants, Antique Teakwood from the Parlor, and New Leather Dr. Martens Boots)
  • Deep Ocean Vast Sea (no notes on website, probably from their cabinet of curiosities offerings - smells like a light floral over an aquatic base, very interesting)
i really love the colours in the melts, it's just so pretty, and the stickers were a nice little surprise that reminded me of why it's so fun and meaningful to be purchasing indie.

everything arrived in good condition and it's a testament to the strength of the scent that even before these went anywhere near a wax melter, the mailer containing these pretty packages imparted a lovely scent to the desk where i had left it.

this review is of some products that i had purchased at regular price with my own money, and a review set that was included with my purchase. i didn’t receive any incentives for writing this. i’m not affiliated with Athame and Alchemy and as always, all opinions remain my own.

Athame and Alchemy's catalogue is available here. prices are US$1.45 for a single cube of wax (about 0.65oz), US$4.45 for a four-cube pack (about 2.3oz) and US$6.45 for a wax sack (about 4oz); they also offer a cabinet of curiosities of one-of-a-kind samples and various bits and bobs for varying discounted prices (before shipping).
