Deconstructing Eden - Winter Song

christmas (and new year's) may have come and gone with its accompanying real life priorities and commitments over social media, but i'm pretty determined to see my advent scent-lendar through regardless with this final post for the season.

for christmas day, my gift to myself was the limited-edition Winter Song by Deconstructing Eden, a Sucreabeille exclusive which (as far as i can tell) is no longer available on either brand's websites.

in line with its name, Winter Song features beautiful notes: softly falling snow on balsam firs, birchwood, a drop of oud, black pine, and bayberry.

with the first sprays from the bottle, the dense woodiness of the black pine comes out strongly, elevated by a resinous quality from the oud and a lift of sweetness from the bayberry. i can't really detect the 'snow' described, though the rest of the notes are spot-on in a good harmony. i do like the bayberry as a note, though the combination of the oud and black pine make for an intense resinous scent that's a touch too strong for me personally.

this one doesn't change too much on my skin - if anything, it becomes more well-blended, making it hard to differentiate the individual notes after about half an hour of wear.

Winter Song is a lovely atmospheric, though one that i wouldn't consider too realistic - this is more like a fantasy lyrical interpretation of a winter forest, a magical combination of a surreal wood against a backdrop of lurking dangers and the promise of a sweet happily-ever-after.

i can appreciate this one for where it's coming from and as a showcase of Deconstructing Eden's perfumery, but the resins are stronger than i like so it doesn't strike enough of a chord with me to be a go-to scent i would reach for often. i'm glad to have tried this (especially since it doesn't seem to be available any more) and will finish up my sample vial, but i don't have any hard feelings about not being able to get a repurchase. 6/10.
