Stereoplasm - Lovesick Lake

some perfumes need to come with a huge warning label on the bottle, because they really smell so delicious you could drink it. Lovesick Lake by Stereoplasm is a prime example of this; smelling exactly like what it says on the tin: Bright pink and heartbreakingly optimistic; cotton candy served with thick strawberry cheesecake and sour lemon squares on a hot rainy day.

in the bottle, this is predominantly a soft and fluffy cotton candy (in pink, what other colour could it be?) with the aroma of fresh strawberries and a contrasting touch of an extremely sour and tart citrus. it's very light and sweet, not unlike the naive joy of 'love at first sight', though the hints of a rather acidic lemon at the edges seem to hint that this relationship isn't going to have a fairytale ending.

but it's only on my skin that the scent actually begins to live up to its name.

turns out that the light cotton candy note, which fascinated me so much in the bottle, fades off relatively quickly after application and only lasted for about 10-15 minutes. in that time, a creamy cheesecake note begins to come into play to round off the brightness of the fruits, and its sourness goes well with the mouth-puckering lemon. the strawberries maintain their sweetness throughout, but it's no match for the combined strength of the cheesecake and lemon. i don't get much petrichor on its own, but over the course of its three hours or so of wear, the scent does give off some vibes of a warm humidity that is all-too-familiar in sunny Singapore.

wearing Lovesick Lake is a brightly sweet experience on the initial sniffs, but as the scent develops further it's evident that this is, at its core, anything but. the scent starts out naively optimistic with a light sugary sweetness, which over time is eventually forced to acknowledge the reality that a genuine relationship can't all be rainbows and butterflies - love needs the harsh and bitter times to prove its mettle, and after all, in relationships "it's compromise that moves us along".

isn't it sad that those relationships which appear to be all loving happiness and fluff without clash or conflict, can sometimes turn out to be the most loveless of all?
