Stereoplasm - Moon Milk, Maki-san - New York Cheesecake Snowskin Mooncake

in keeping with the celebrations for the mid-autumn festival this year, another moon-themed scent that i wanted to enjoy with my mooncakes this season was Stereoplasm's Moon Milk (crumbs from almond tuiles and lavender sugar dust, one last sip of Fortuna tea leaves left behind in a porcelain cup reveal chilled chiffon cream illuminated by a single flame glinting off the gold filigree).

in the bottle and on application, Moon Milk is true to its notes with the first sniffs yielding mostly soft slightly-herbaceous lavender, almond and slightly-bitter tea dregs. the porcelain also lends a rather refined coolness overall to the scent as well, and there's a surprising light dusting of cinnamon spiciness underneath that gives it the mildest of edges. from its name, i would have expected the chiffon cream (or 'milk') to have been a tad more prominent, but it seems content to remain hiding in the background.

consistent with my experience of the (older) lower-concentration perfumes from Stereoplasm, the throw is unfortunately almost non-existent and the lightness of the scent meant that it was only appreciable when right under my nose. it was also a pity that the perfume also only lasted about a couple of hours on my skin, so significantly-liberal slathering and reapplication throughout the evening was required in order to properly enjoy it.

despite the reference to tuiles and sugar dust in the description, Moon Milk is far from being a sweet perfume; in essence i found this to be a contemplative and mildly-relaxing scent perfectly evocative of moon-gazing with close friends on a clear cloudless night. it's a lovely scent experience and though i'm certain that the two 6ml bottles would not last very long at the rate of application required, it's not a scent that i feel i would need a replacement for when they're done. 5.5/10.

where Moon Milk was lacking in the sugar department, the New York cheesecake snowskin mooncake from sushi restaurant Maki-san more than made up for it.

i'm generally quite a skeptic when it comes to east-meets-west fusion, but this was actually quite pleasant - the cake was quite rich and sweet, with a generous helping of raisins inside. it was a nice dessert on its own that was passable as a 'raisin-filled cheesecake' though perhaps not so much as a 'mooncake' (somehow it's just harder for me mentally to reconcile the western milk-cheese style cake here with the usual paste filling that one would typically find in asian mooncakes).

still, considering that i was able to get a mooncake of this size for less than SGD$10, it was a good dessert that was great value for money and a budget-friendly way to enjoy the mid-autumn festival celebrations.
