with the unceasing deluge of rain we've been having lately here in Singapore, i've been missing fall and wanted to enjoy a scent that just screams 'autumn' to me - Poison Apple (gourmand ~~ Freshly picked Honey Crisp Apples, a Glass of Bourbon aged in Maple Wood Casks, and a touch of Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oils… a Boozy apple, not Bakery Apple Scent).
a while back, Kimberly from Athame and Alchemy had kindly reached out to me on Instagram and sent me some wax melts for review together with my purchase of some of her products.
on her store website, she says that candy is her favourite part of halloween and that's entirely believable, looking at the lovely 'candy bar' wax melt gourmands that she had come up with for the season. these halloween melts come in a smaller format than their usual store offerings, and i liked how each portion broke off easily and its size was just nice to use in my little melter.
as you may have guessed from the recent success of the ongoing whisk(e)y wednesday posts on here, i'm partial to a good boozy scent though that also does come with a higher level of expectations compared to other notes. Poison Apple does meet that standard - the bourbon in here is smooth and sufficiently strong (alcohol-wise) without being overpowering. the apples here are fresh and ripe, and their aroma blends so well with the bourbon and maple wood to create a tribute to autumn.
i had been worried that the cinnamon would steal the show and turn this into some form of apple pie/tart, but accurate to the description, this is a boozy apple not a bakery apple - the cinnamon leaf is very subtle and allows the bourbon and apple to take greater prominence.
in the melter, the scent was pretty consistent with my experience of it in solid form. it had a good throw of a few metres and lasted for over six hours. this one made me feel like i had been transported to the backroom of a bourbon distillery in autumn, with the smell of apples in the air and bourbon maturing in rich wooden casks all around.
as with the rest of Athame and Alchemy's wax melts, this had a good throw (even in solid form) before i opened the brown paper bag in which it came. with its refined deliciousness and smooth boozyness, Poison Apple is one of which i'm going to keep a single wax block at my desk to enjoy sniffing from time to time. 9/10.

this review is of a product that i had received as part of a review set that was included with my purchase. i didn’t receive any incentives for writing this. i’m not affiliated with Athame and Alchemy and as always, all opinions remain my own.
Athame and Alchemy's catalogue is available here; Poison Apple doesn't seem to be available any more (perhaps it was discontinued for the season) but it may make a return next falloween.
