Death And Floral - Decomposing Roses For A Decomposed Romance

Decomposing Roses For A Decomposed Romance (Rose, white musk, vanilla, pink peppercorn, honeysuckle) by Death And Floral is a beautiful example of the wit and lyricism that goes into the brand's signature scent titles.

like its name, this is a sweet seemingly-romantic scent with just that barest underlying hint that not everything is as alright as it seems to the world.

in the bottle, this is a lovely floral blend of rose and honeysuckle, with a good body of white musk supporting it. the sweetness of the florals is intensely entrancing, and the element of 'decomposing' was almost non-existent no matter how hard i tried to find it.

that said, the depth of the scent comes out so much more on application. on my skin, this is a soft floral blend that has an element of being somewhat cold and distant, not unlike the smell of flowers in a funeral parlour, which are lovely in their own right and yet feel somewhat alien in their surroundings. the pink peppercorn becomes more apparent on the drydown, but not in a sharp or spicy way - it's very subtle and seems to serve more as a contrasting bitterness to amplify that essence of faded paleness surrounding the flowers. overall, it's quite a subtle and haunting blend that just works so well to make this a scent befitting of its lyrical name.

Decomposing Roses For A Decomposed Romance lasted for just under three hours on my skin with quite a personal throw. it initially comes across as a straightforward scent, though the morph that this undergoes post-application really underlines the truth that perfumes don't always need to be complex to be beautiful and that the scent experience is always enhanced so much more when the perfume lives up to its given name and theme. i'm glad that i had bought a 5ml of this one and will enjoy wearing it from time to time when i'm feeling a little more in a subtle-macabre mood, though with how well the many others in Death And Floral's catalogue have worked out for me so far, it will be a while before i'll be able to bring myself to circle back to this one. 7.5/10.
