Sucreabeille - Goth. As. Fuck

sometimes indie perfumes can turn out more edgy than their mainstream counterparts - it's cool in the sense of being able to experience a more unique and niche range of creativity, though these can also sometimes end up being more polarising in themselves.

enter Sucreabeille with Goth. As. Fuck (A totally unapologetic haunted cathedral. Rich, dark resins, thick incense, beeswax candles, frankincense and myrrh. Cool stone floors and cloves, red musk and sassafras. Clary sage and wormwood. Guiac wood and patchouli, and a whisper of black jasmine.)

let's deal with the elephant in the room first - i'm really not a fan of the explicit name.

as someone for whom smoky notes hold great appeal, i love the scent inspiration of a haunted cathedral and the notes composition. but i feel that there are many other ways to christen a resinous-incensy scent in the spirit of this house's branding without having to resort to swear words. a goth scent by any other name would still smell as sweet; personally, i would have loved it if the scent had been called The Goth Within or Your Inner Goth Girl, because to me, this perfume evokes a dark brooding morbidity which is initially stealthily camouflaged beneath what comes across as an unassuming typical jasmine floral, but soon reveals its true colours (black, silver and more black) with time.

in the bottle, the main notes that shine from a first cursory sniff are a moody jasmine layered over a ton of resin and with a touch of incense smoke in the foreground. taking the time to smell this more deeply brings out more nuances, in particular the sage and cloves adding the faintest herbal sharpness to the scent, and the distinctive sweet earthiness of frankincense mingling with the more bitter myrrh beneath.

on my skin, the perfume blooms with a moderate throw of about a foot. the jasmine develops quite a bit more, as if drawing a veil in a futile attempt to conceal the darker character lurking behind. the incense is stronger and the resins develop a personality of their own with the frankincense in particular lending an unmistakable sweetness to the scent. i don't get the beeswax or red musk as distinct notes, though they're very likely helping to rein in the otherwise-overpowering strength of the resins in the overall blend. over the course of its four hours or so of wear, the jasmine and smoke are the first to fade though the resins remain relatively stable.

interestingly, from an Asian perspective, the strong resins and incense in this scent remind me of a Taoist temple on offering day when incense smoke billows out from under the pagoda and devotees fill the air with chanting.

it's definitely an edgy scent, not your everyday wear-to-work perfume, and something that i could envision a goth wearing. fans of resinous scents may want to keep this one in mind (notwithstanding the name) though it's personally a bit too strong in that department for me. all in all, this was an interesting sniff experience, though i don't foresee that there will be many times when i would be able to find an appropriate occasion to wear this in future. 3.5/10.
