A Whisky Kitty Christmas

this christmas, i truly experienced what it means to receive a gift in the truest sense of the word, something that was so unexpected and thoughtfully sweet that i literally teared up when i opened the box.

very few of my friends in real life know about my 'alter ego' here on social media, partly because i value my privacy a lot and also because i'm not one to aggressively self-promote my blog or Instagram in real life.

only a handful of my closer friends know about my hobbies (and social media reviews); one of them surprised me just before christmas with a pretty red box professionally tied with a gold ribbon, and the enigmatic tip "don't drop it".

i've known this friend for years now, having shared many good experiences over computer gaming and being each other's drinking buddies through thick and thin. this friend really wasn't known for being a gifts person (actually, come to think of it, this is probably the first christmas present i'd received from this friend heh) so naturally, curiosity killed the cat.

it was impossible to wait until christmas to open it... but when i did lift that lid, i was really, really touched and genuinely lost for words.

it turns out that my friend had ordered these customised rocks glasses from a local specialised craft store, pieces that were lovely in themselves and made even more special for being truly one of a kind (or well, a pair of a kind).

i couldn't help but gush my thanks and gratitude almost immediately, and my friend appeared nonchalant in response (though with years of experience, i knew it was just a smooth facade over pleased satisfaction).

"best i could do... you can use them for your Instagram photos, or just to enjoy a pour or two in the evening."

i'm glad for the Asian cultural conditioning of not opening gifts in front of the giver, because i would totally have cried and not known what to say.

'best' my friend could do indeed - the best gifts don't necessarily involve a good deal of money or time; they're special because of the thought that went into them and the sentiment that they reflect.

a glass as special as this deserved nothing less than an amazing first pour to christen it properly, and you can check out the video on my Instagram @sniffsandscribbles here.
