Heaven Scent Wax Melts - Amber+Lavender

with the weather now vacillating between glaring sunshine and pouring storms here in Singapore, i decided to pick another wax melt in my collection that evoked a similar contrasting duality, and chose Amber+Lavender from Heaven Scent Wax Melts for today's weekend wax melt video. thankfully, the natural light held up long enough to let me take this before the cats and dogs descended in the late afternoon.

Amber+Lavender is interesting in that the colour gradient shifts from a soft pink to a darker indigo across the snap bar, but (at least to my nose) the appearance doesn’t seem to have any specific bearing on the scent itself. though one thing that did strike me was how the colour is more muted on this one (perhaps to reflect the contemplative lavender?) compared to the brightness of the ones i unpacked from my christmas advent calendar.

i'm used to my wax melts coming in a more chunky format, with dimensions closer to that of a cube than a thin piece of chocolate broken from a bar, but a single piece of this one still fit decently in my tealight-powered mini melter. i think that i'm more partial though to cubic melts for a longer and more interesting experience when it comes to the visual element of watching the wax in my melter!

no official notes were available for this scent, though Amber+Lavender is one of those scents that is pretty true to its name – it’s a smooth yet rich amber accentuated with touches of a floral, less-herbaceous lavender; a nice combination that works decently as a soothing midday respite.

perhaps because of the bar format (and considerably larger wrapping), the throw was relatively shy in solid form, but the melter helped it open up a lot – a single block over a tealight had a decent throw of about a metre and lasted for about four or so hours. it’s honestly not a bad melt and scent in itself (and i’ll be happy to finish using up all of it to scent a much smaller space like a bathroom), but overall not one that i like enough to see myself buying again. 4/10.

after i posted the above review and first wax melt video of the scent, the owner dropped by in the comments to share that this was actually a dupe of a Jo Malone scent by the same name.

truth be told, i wouldn't have purchased this if i had known it was intended to be a duplicate (it was listed under the 'fresh' category on their scent list, instead of their 'dupes' section). this isn't the place for me to be waxing lyrical about my thoughts on duplicates, though i think it's definitely coloured my perception of the scent somewhat.

this time, i did try using two pieces in my melter instead of one, which helped with the throw (though it didn't feel like a significant improvement to the longevity).

the owner also shared that the official notes for the scent were: "a rich fougere fragrance opening with top notes of lavender and geranium leading into a heart of softwoods resting on a base of amber, frankincense and tonka".

nuance-wise, i would say that looking at the notes i can now see how the tonka is blending with the florals and amber, and there's a tiny touch of smokiness and deeper resins from the frankincense. that said, i don’t get everything described in the official notes - perhaps there’s something lost in having translated this into a wax melt medium.

i still stand by my original rating, though with the added basis that i didn't appreciate not having been aware at the point of purchase that this was sold as a duplicate of a more established scent. unfortunately this is definitely not one that i will be buying again, though through no fault of the scent combination itself.
