Stereoplasm - Snow On Stone

christmas may have come and gone with its accompanying real life priorities and commitments over social media, but i'm pretty determined to see my advent scent-lendar through regardless.

for christmas eve, my gift to myself was Snow On Stone by Stereoplasm, a black friday 2019 exclusive which made a brief reappearance for the same event this year as one of their gifts with purchase. i had put this one aside for being barely detectable on application (as my skin is cursed to experience with the previous lower-concentration versions) so after having allowed this one to age for a year, i was excited to see how its longevity and throw would improve with time.

Snow On Stone has really unique notes unlike any other i've seen before: frozen december soil, valerian root, black cohosh, crushed pearl, lake ice and ambergris. and it's not just the notes - this one is pretty interesting, a blend quite unlike what one would expect from a "perfume".

the first sniffs from the bottle reveal a combination that lives up to its name - this smells like cold stone with a fresh crispness of new snow over it. i had previously never actually paid much attention to the smooth and distant coldness that hewn stone (or marble) can have, but now that i smell it here, it's something that i don't think i will forget.

on my skin, the perfume develops and opens up quite a bit. a new earthiness (presumably from the soil and valerian) emerges as a more gritty contrast to the smooth stone, while at the same time the stone itself gains an almost ethereal pearlescent quality, like that of a mythic treasure guarded by mermen of the deep. i like how the ambergris is interwoven with all these different smells, evoking the undiscovered mysteries beneath the waves of a frozen ocean.

ageing has improved Snow On Stone from when i last tried it six months ago; it now has a decent throw of about a foot and lasted about three and a half hours of wear. this is an exceptional atmospheric that perfectly combines a realistic snowswept stone with mysterious oceanic fantasy, a great perfume that is firmly one of my go-tos for those days when i want to feel less approachable and a bit more like a distant ice queen. 8/10.
