mahjong is one of those games that's fun all the year around, but even more so as a bonding activity with cousins and relatives whom one hasn't caught up with in a while. just the sound of the tiles 'washing' across the table and their cool, smooth feel is enough to bring back countless memories of good times.
my favourite suit in mahjong is the bamboo, and the scent of the day that i chose for my friday night mahjong game was deliberately thematic - Arashiyama by Fantôme is the epitome of lush growing bamboo, with notes of rain-drenched bamboo from the Arashiyama bamboo grove, fresh aomikan slices, Japanese pear, cherry blossom, sandalwood, ginger, white tea, and faded perfume musk.
in the bottle, this is a clean and fresh bamboo perfume that's just alive with beautiful Asian influences. a phenomenal blend of aomikan (green tangerine), Japanese pear, cherry blossom and white tea complement the vibrantly green bamboo, with a touch of sandalwood for contrast. the perfume musk brings everything together in wearability, and also works well with the rain to give the bamboo a cool and smooth feel, curiously similar to that of my lucky mahjong tiles.
on application, the bamboo and sandalwood deepen in complexity and nuance. i've had the privilege to visit the famous bamboo grove that inspired this scent, and Arashiyama really lives up to its name with an amazingly realistic distillation of being surrounded by the green growing bamboo there.
Arashiyama is a good performer as well, with a decent throw of more than a foot. for the two and a half hours or so of wear, the fruits and florals add little unique accents that change over time and combine with the smoothness of the musk to help me feel tranquil and serene, the picture of calm meditation in a quiet bamboo grove.
definitely believe that the peaceful vibes and bamboo influence of Arashiyama played a strong role in my winning one round with a 绿一色!
7.5/10 a really great scent that i will definitely enjoy finishing my sample of, though at the moment i'm still undecided about repurchasing or full-sizing this one.
