Athame+alchemy - Ruby Gloom (wax melt)

after the resounding success of the moody atmospheric wax melt in Dark Academia from Athame and Alchemy (review here), i instinctively knew that i would find myself gravitating more towards their darker atmospherics because they just clicked so well with how i wanted my emo room fragrances to turn out.

so when it was time for me to try another of their wax melts in a similar scent family, i couldn't help but excitedly rub my hands together in anticipation for Ruby Gloom (fruity, gothy, mysterious ~~ Light Dragon’s Blood Incense Mingles with a Glass of Absinthe, Juicy Blackberries, Currants, Weathered Teakwood from the Parlor, and New Leather Dr. Martens Boots). right from the get-go, i was already huffing its brown paper bag packaging with the same intensity of someone hyperventilating, because i just could not get enough of the rich smoky wood and leather aromas.

appearance-wise, this particular one is slightly different from their regular style of wax melt blocks - instead of the single block with swirls of colour that i was more used to, Ruby Gloom comprised a violet wax heart embedded in a light blue wax block, and i was curious to see what would happen to the two when placed in my melter.

Ruby Gloom is, true to its name, a fruity yet dark fragrance overflowing with emo-ness. the scent provides a beautiful contrast between a sweet fruitiness from the dragonsblood and berries, and a gloomy foreboding rising from the combination of wood, leather and smoky incense. while the sweet fruitiness was more prominent in solid form, using this in the melter brought out much more of the wood and leather to keep it in check.

in my melter, this had a good throw of a few metres and lasted for about six hours.

just like Dark Academia, this one is a great dark and moody scent to enjoy for those "feeling-emo" days; but if i had to directly pit the two head-to-head, i would definitely go for Dark Academia every time because the sweet fruitiness in Ruby Gloom unfortunately throws the brooding mood off just a tad too much for my liking.

6/10 i was glad to have had the opportunity to try this out, though i only had one block of this scent and had no regrets about using the whole thing in my melter – it's not a bad scent but i don't feel attached to it enough to want to keep part of it around in solid form to enjoy longer.
