i was quite excited for today's scent of the day because i really love intense scents, and «Gnarlwood» by Damask Haus promised a unique experience.
in the bottle, «Gnarlwood» presents a deceptively-sweet facade with a concentrated burst of berries, plums and other stone fruits. against that backdrop, the sandalwood beneath almost reads like a dark chocolate.
indeed, one could be forgiven for believing that this is just another autumn gourmand, but things change very quickly after that.
within a few minutes of application, the gourmand sweetness fades to reveal the scent's true nature, a monster of a perfume that's closer to the dark claw-like branches of its namesake rather than the blood-red fruits littered beneath.
the contrast from the initial sweetness brings out the dark intensity of the sandalwood and smoky tobacco beneath, though i had been expecting more.
while this is some potent stuff, in my opinion it's not polarising enough to live up to the "not for everyone" warning.
still, that's not a bad thing since the scent retains some degree of universal appeal; anyone who's been on the fence about 'dark' and 'intense' perfumes can consider trying «Gnarlwood» as a gentle yet realistic introduction to these notes.
📝 official notes: "sandalwood, over ripe fruits, pipe tobacco, lumberjack. this is an intensely dark scent thus may not be for everyone."
