Pulp Fragrance – Ensnare

{undercover review of own purchase}

with falloween (a portmanteau of fall and halloween) right around the corner, i've decided to dedicate the entire halloween month to everything sinister and spooky.
continuing the witchy lineup of my favourite sorcerous scents, today's scent of the day «Ensnare» is half of a pair of sibling scents released by Pulp Fragrance, a Canadian indie perfume brand specialising in scents that tell a story.

where her sister «Embrace» is a good kindly kitchen witch, «Ensnare» embodies the exact opposite.

in the bottle, «Ensnare» beckons with a subtle sweet maple, though there's definitely much more than meets the eye (or nose) here; a foreboding uneasiness lurks in wait, a grim spectre beneath the sugar-coated mask.

on application, the spectre is unleashed in all its strong resinous fury, made even more sinister by the sharp contrast against the initially-innocent sweetness.

over the course of its wear, a powerful saltiness battles with the pungent oud and animalic labdanum, yet the faint maple influence still makes it surprisingly wearable.

«Ensnare» is an olfactory masterpiece, a dark scent that conjures up the blackness of a looming void and the bleakness of a depressed soul at the edge of that abyss with nowhere else to turn and nothing else to lose.

this perfume really pushed the limits of darkness for me, and quickly became one of my instant go-to scents to complement a brooding mood or create a no-nonsense somberness for serious occasions.
📝 official notes: "«Embrace»'s darker sister at the other end of the woods, who lures you in with the promise of maple sugar sweets then latches the door behind you. rich dark oud, labdanum, and a line of salt at the door."
